About

About Dr. Messere

You deserve a physician who understands that you are a whole person — and who can help you make the most of your health and your happiness.

My story

Why I left surgery

When I began my career in medicine, I believed that becoming a surgeon was one of the greatest ways I could help people. I completed five years of research at Harvard Medical School, earned my medical degree, completed a five-year general surgery residency, and specialized in colon and rectal surgery.

It did not take long for me to discover how limited I was. For people who just needed surgery — remove the problem and move on — it was great.

But so many people came to me with ongoing, wearing problems that were stealing their enjoyment of everyday life. Constipation, irritable bowel, pelvic pain, bloating, low energy, food intolerances. I did my best, but I was a specialist and a surgeon, and my days were spent either scheduling people for surgery or performing it.

Over time I began asking different questions. Why were so many people developing chronic disease? What could be done before they ever reached the point of needing surgery?

Those questions changed the direction of my career.

What I do now

A practice built on different questions

I studied functional medicine, and I embraced a holistic approach to health — getting down to the root cause of issues like hormonal imbalance, irritable bowel syndrome, low energy, and irritability.

Today my practice focuses on hormone optimization, metabolic health, nutrition, regenerative medicine, and healthy aging. I work with active adults who want more than symptom management — they want to preserve their health, maintain their independence, and continue doing the things they love.

Every patient is different. My role is to understand your goals, identify the factors contributing to your health concerns, and create a personalized plan based on your biology, your lifestyle, and your priorities.

My approach is grounded in science, informed by decades of clinical experience, and focused on helping patients feel better today while investing in their long-term health.

For a great many adults in midlife, hormones are a large part of that picture. Not the whole picture — but a part that conventional care too often waves away. That is why bioidentical hormone optimization using The Brite Method® is a cornerstone of what I do.

In her own words

“I don’t believe there is a magical pill that will make you healthy. But with some shifts in lifestyle, diet, supplements, and self-care, you can get on the road to life-long health and vitality.”

Carolyn Messere, MD

A note carried over from my earlier practice

Soul Deep Wellness

Patients who have worked with me before will recognize this phrase, and it still describes how I practice.

You deserve wellness not just in your body, but in your mind, your spirit, and your soul. There is no magical pill that makes a person healthy. But with some shifts in lifestyle, diet, supplements, and self-care — and, where it is indicated, carefully managed hormone therapy — you can get on the road to life-long health and vitality.

The best way to work with me is over time, making small, manageable changes with expert guidance. We order tests and treatments as we go, and make the adjustments you need for your individual progress. The goal is a complete picture — diet, lifestyle, and supplement recommendations alongside the emotional and mental aspects of your health.

Who I work with

My patients

Adults who want to take a proactive approach to their health.

Active professionals and retirees

Many of my patients are professionals or active retirees who enjoy golf, tennis, pickleball, travel, and strength training. They value expertise and want an individualized relationship with their physician.

People who were told it’s just aging

Fatigue, poor sleep, brain fog, weight that will not move, a libido that disappeared. Told their labs were normal and sent home. Often they were not given the right tests, or the right interpretation of them.

People planning for the long view

Osteopenia and early osteoporosis, cardiometabolic risk, thyroid issues, insulin resistance. Patients who want to protect their strength, their bones and their independence for decades, not months.

Let’s talk

Every plan starts with a conversation.

Tell me what has been going on and what you want to get back to. That is the appointment that shapes everything else.
