When I finished medical school, residency and a fellowship in colorectal surgery, I figured I had it made. I was all set to start a fabulous, lucrative career. And most importantly, I would really be helping people.

What I found, instead, was that I had to work my way around a lot of egos and personalities to get anything done. My days were frustrating and filled with bureaucracy. It didn't seem like I could even help myself.

What I realized, though, was that it didn't have to be so hard. I didn't have to go home at the end of the day exhausted and worn down.

So, now I help people who work in frustrating, bureaucratic jobs feel energized and excited. So you can get back to the business of helping people.

MY STORY

Hi, I'm Dr. Carolyn Messere. I went to medical school because I really wanted to make a difference in the world. I became a surgeon so I could be active and involved.

But it didn't really work out that way. While I loved taking care of patients and doing surgery, I found myself hampered by my own inability to work with so many people. My own ego and personality clashed with the egos and personalities all around me.

Let's face it, anybody can work in an environment where everyone is easy-going and cooperative. But to be of real value, to really make a difference, no matter what your job is, you have to be able to work with all kinds of people. Even the really difficult, egotistical, self-centered jerks. And there are plenty more of them, I'm sure you've noticed.
